Singbird Song (Karl Kling Remix)

about

Berry and Karl Kling met in 2005 at a small liberal arts college called Greenville College (now University). They admired each others’ projects over the years and created with friends in common (Beth Bombara, Stacey Winter) but had yet to collaborate directly. Perhaps most notably, Kling has a long history of collaborating with Grammy Award-winning remix artist RAC. Kling also co-founded the label MANI/PEDI Records, focused on releasing unheralded indie dance music. In 2020, Kling released his solo effort Body & Mind, which he described as “a collection of songs recorded over a 5 year period in a time of coming to understand the world around me while dealing with the difficulties of distance & depression, yet always returning to hope & love.” Kling’s blend of propulsive beats and emotional resonance made him an ideal fit to remix “Singbird Song”--one of the more vulnerable songs on Berry’s Vault of Light. Kling recontextualizes the song with ambient synths, chiming bell set melodies, and a restrained-yet-driving percussion treatment. The result maintains the song’s air of mystery while imbuing it with a sense of calm determination on its wandering journey.

lyrics

Where will we hide
in the darkest room
of our being?
It’s rumored that the moon
might know where the universe ends.
The universe ends, but she
won’t spill the Kool-aid secret.
The Kool-aid secret --
I begged and begged and begged her, Please.

But how far is too far when it comes to
our hard bodies
with curves that can never meet,
and bunnies draining our batteries?

We might discover
the essence of beauty
sitting between
the smallest enormities.

(page 12)*She finally said,
The internet consumed
at the end of
the intercourse we choose
might taste like a song bird sings,
so sing birdsongs repeating.”
Still she won’t spill the Kool-aid secret.
The Kool-aid secret --
I begged and begged and begged her, Please.

But how far is too far when it comes to
our hard bodies
with curves that can never meet,
and bunnies draining our batteries?

We might discover
the essence of beauty
sitting between
the smallest enormities.
